1.
Of oceans in fog Waves like teeth Tear at the land Year upon year Rivers crash down Drawn from heights by the thaw Grinding rough edges To smooth Bridges collapse By force and neglect Immutable shores Twist and distort Beyond the horizon An ocean of teeth Rivers of blood Lakes run deep As tidelands flood No time to alter course And no hope to steer Hold to what you can
2.
Gathered debris Beneath bare trees A life that falls Away like leaves Shedding limbs Cracking hearts Collapsing into Decaying parts A warmth In humid darkness Came to me And I pushed through loam earth And roots of trees Green shoots spear through ashen soil Hungering for sky and stone A midden heap Of the lives we leave behind New green over grey We build our lives On this decay New green over grey Lives are built On past decay
3.
This synthetic abyss Only exists To draw more eyes to itself A Thousand Horrors per second Sweetly beckon Us to sink deeper within What is it we see Intoxicating Calls nightmare into being Every night Horrors unfold Horrors untold Deaths in their millions Every day New despair waits A world in decay Howling in rage A stone of crushing weight A hidden blade A wound that we carry A psychology of pain A leech that will drain Bleeding us barren Every night Horrors unfold Horrors untold Deaths in their millions Every day New despair waits A world in decay Howling in rage The specter of blood intoxicates Inviting the derangement of violence A chamber of sorrows and paralysis A deluge of climate grief and fascist creep Despair begets despair Rage begets rage A blurring of eyes and faces A reddening haze A vision of defeat Woes that repeat Enervating prophecy
4.
Rainhammer 06:18
The ocean, silvered by dawn Too warm it seems The air on the edge of collapse With a humid thickness I can't seem to sleep, so here I wait On this concrete dock overlooking the bay Lights in the distance The night broods along with me A fear for the future, or a fear of it A hissing sound in the distance, the rain approaches Will it wash clean, or will it wash away?
5.
Antipode 06:51
6.
Inver 04:21
Tributaries entwine Like a rope Will braid Inver Strands of life Warp and change Cruelest cut A blessing Inver
7.
Distortions of form Distortions of mind An event horizon Muscles too weak To resist This gravity As the world is warped Our bones distort Yet our joys are no less For relativistic bonds No vision No escape No light enters or leaves Our lives held fast A financial eschatology This dead prison of history
8.
Quietus 07:33
I feel coarse sand and smooth stone The smell of salt in air like blood The breeze is tainted with foul smoke Great machines trudge by in drones One thousand miles Of coastal land Emptied out Sorrow and release Deadening our hearts Quietus Tides that once teemed rich with life Empty as the tar expands A blackened quietude Silencing these bleeding lands One thousand miles Of wilderness Silent now Emptied out Sorrow and release Are silencing our wild hearts Quietus Have we surrendered

INVER shifts from more obviously metal-indebted work as shown on their debut and the perverse heaviness of their material for their split LP with Putrescine, to draw sonic textures and tighter song structures from alt rock. Adzes embraces not only melodic shapes and textural, chordal guitar work but also the specific use of clean vocals, feeling often more like Dinosaur Jr. than The Ocean. There are certain obvious touchstones for this record given his musical lineage, from Isis and Neurosis to Kowloon Walled City and the almighty Godflesh. But newer elements drawn from the heavier modern wing of shoegaze opened the door to explore these new avenues. Recent work from groups like Hum and Cloakroom as well as the classic material from groups like Soundgarden and Medicine provide a basis for more contained but still explosive songwriting. INVER is something new pressaging something even newer, the first steps down an exciting and genre-agnostic road.
